Too Easy, Big Easy

February 11, 2010

If you know what my title means, well that is a good thing because those are the 2 huge things going on at LT.

First off, the boys basketball team is STILL undefeated after beating both Glenbard West and Proviso East (which was Pack the Place) this past weekend.  But what I want to talk about was the lack of sportsmanship by one of the Proviso East players.  Possibly as to be one of the worst ways to go.  I mean first he rejects  a helping hand from Junior Forward Nick Burt and then decides to tackle, stomp on, and hold down Senior Guard Jimmy Stamas.  What makes this even crazier is that the refs didn’t even call anything on this player.  Once again becoming “A Bonehead Moment in Sports.”  Also this Saturday LT plays Downers Grove North at the North Campus Fieldhouse at 6pm, you can tune into WLTL 88.1 FM for the broadcast.

Now to talk about Lombardi Gras (get it Mardi rhymes with Lombardi, haha yeah sorry about that).  To be honest I didn’t really care who won this Super Bowl because no matter who won we would witness history.  A quick side note the Doritos commercials were quality, Arcade Fire was played at least 322409432907234 times, I was surprised Kim Kardashian was not really shown at all (or at least not that I remember), and this was the most watched TV event in history with 106.5 MILLION people watching it.  I mean we had the chance to witness Peyton Manning stacking his claim as possibly the greatest quarterback ever (or at least of his playing era, sorry Tom Brady), or we could have seen the inspirational, dynamic, creative Saints squad finally deliver their city a championship.  Luckily we got to see the later because who can’t be emotional at the moment where Drew Brees was with his son (by the way nice headphones), possibly one of the more enduring moments of Super Bowl history.  Really the Saints deserved it because if I could compare them to a fictional sports team it would have to be the Mighty Ducks/USA juniors team in Mighty Ducks 2, while the Colts were that team from Iceland.  If you don’t get that reference then check out that movie and also we will try to get more blogs up.

One Hell of a Weekend

January 24, 2010

Words cannot describe the weekend that the Lyons Township varsity basketball team had. It all started Friday with the Blackout, students showed up at school sporting their newly purchased Blackout tee-shirts. To describe the shirts, they were black tees with white lettering, with LTHS in the same font as the the band AC/DC. The sight at school was just a preview of what we would witness later that night. As seven o’clock rolled around the North Campus Fieldhouse began to form it’s sea of black. The whole west end of the Fieldhouse was reserved for students only. LT’s goal was to fill the entire west end bleachers and they would. Nearly 4,000 fans filed into the Fieldhouse on this brisk night smashing expectations. About ten minutes before tip off the Student Section Leaders, cheerleaders, and assistant coaches passed out 1,500 black rally towels to the students. The view from the press box was incredible, rally towels circling the air, the buzz of excitement coming from the students, and faces of the LT players hoping to push their perfect season even further. As the game started the opposing Oak Park River Forest Huskies (13-4) jumped out to an early lead that would be held up to the closing moments. Lyons Dan Lalonde, Jack Tosh Tournament MVP, scored no points until the 4th quarter. The Huskies were trying to play spoiler to LT’s perfect season in front of the 4,000 fans in black. With about four minutes left in the game the Lions trailed by four until the man of the hour, Dan Lalonde, came alive. Lalonde scored all of his 13 points in the 4th quarter. With 18 seconds left on the clock, OPRF trailed by three, their inbound pass went to Jordan Foster, who put up a desperation three to try to knot the game up at 55 put the ball hit off the rim and LT scrambled for the rebound, LaLonde came up with ball and race down the end of the court and threw down a Thunderous tomahawk jam for good measure as time expired, which sent the fans screaming onto the court to lift up their prized player. For any of those privileged to listen to WLTL’s coverage of the Blackout, know how excited I was with the call. This game was by far the most electric and exhilarating game I have ever been privileged to call in my four years in the sports department. This pushed LT’s perfect season to 15-0, but their weekend wasn’t finished yet. Coach Sloan of the Lions received terrible news early Saturday morning. Lalonde was taken to hospital with stomach problems and would be unable to play their game later that night against the hated Red Devils. Inside sources say Dan has appendicitis and can be out for two weeks. But the Lions weren’t going to let this hinder another epic performance in front of the home crowd. The Lions had Central looking for exit door early on and won the 59-42. This game was a rematch of last years Blackout. In conclusion the Lions are still perfect with a record of 16-0. They play again this Friday night at Proviso West. Proviso beat the Lions in a heart breaker last year, so the Lions will be looking for revenge. The following weekend is Pack the Place so be sure cheer on the Lions and if your unable to attend the game listen to WLTL 88.1 FM La Grange as we will be calling the game as usual.

Random Things

January 19, 2010

Usually we’re suppose to talk about serious sports things on this blog.  Like the NFL playoffs, the amazingness that is the Blackhawks, Gilbert Arenas pulling a gun out on his teammate (Top 10 Bonehead Moment), etc.  However I feel that since I haven’t blogged in a month I need to throw a curveball into this.

Let’s talk about two things that have caught my eye: Ice Hockey (pick-up), and intramural soccer

First things first, pick-up ice hockey is probably one of the best things to do in the winter (if you’re a sports fan).  On MLK Day a couple of my friends and I went to Gilbert Park by North Campus to go play some hockey.  There were two guys in their late 20s already at the rink.  Instead of trying to split up the rink we just decided to play together.  It was a good time trying to outdeke each other, goofing around, doing between the legs shots.  Then about a group of 6 came and asked to play.  Without question everyone said sure.  Having 8 on 8 hockey will probably be one of my highlights of the winter, and it also showed how exhausting playing 2 hours of hockey can be.

Now onto intramural soccer, the most intense intramural sport at LT.  There are 24 teams in the league and plenty of teams were shut out because they were 5 min late from being the last team in.  The passion of this is ridiculous (I would know because my team, Los Calvitos, is probably one of the crazier teams).  Teams trash talk for weeks before the game (I’m talking to you AP Physics), make their own jerseys (guilty as charged), and make obscene chants.  Plus even kids who don’t play soccer can participate, so for all those freshmen, sophomore, and juniors do it next year you won’t regret it at all.

That is what I’ve got for this week, Fabs and I will try to update this thing more.  Don’t blame us we had finals and then winter break laziness before that.

Sports Buzz

January 6, 2010

Hello again,

I hope everyone had a great holiday season. Its been a while since our last blog and I apologize for that. Lyons Township students had the past two weeks off for Winter Break, but the WLTL Sports Department put in a few extra hours over the break to give the listeners a special treat. On December 19, the Lyons varsity basketball team played a regular season game at the Untied Center. With the help of Nick Zeisloft’s four three-pointers and a total of twenty-two points the Lions won the game 72-66 keeping their perfect season hopes still alive. The emotion of the game was outstanding both teams leaving everything on the court. From calling the previous games this was by far the best and hardest team the Lions have played so far this year. Myself and Matt Callaghan had prime seating once again thanks to the LT Athletic Department. In the following week the Lyons also played in the Jack Tosh Tournament at York and dominated the competition including a victory over Riverside-Brookfield in the finals to capture their first ever Jack Tosh Trophy. As of this post the Lyons remain undefeated (12-0) and their next game will be played at home on January 8, 2010 vs. York at 7:30, WLTL will be broadcasting the game. Besides LT sports, the NFL postseason has commenced and the teams that did not make the playoffs have already made decision on their future, including the Bears. If you did not hear, Lovie Smith is staying in Chicago, but the same can not be said about the hated Ron Turner and the five other position coaches. I said this earlier and some questioned me about Charlie Weis taking the job as Offensive Coordinator, but rumors have been circulating about either he or Mike Martz taking the job. Martz was the former coach of the St. Louis Rams during the time of “The Greatest Show on Turf” when the Rams went on to win the Super Bowl. Although, Weis has also drawn interest from the Kansas City Chiefs but many think he could just sit back, take it easy for year, and collect his paycheck from Notre Dame. I think any Bears fan is relieved that the former staff has been fired and is anxious about what is to come in the future.

Matt’s Top Ten

December 11, 2009

This top ten is in no specific order, it is meant for you the reader to look at and maybe get some ideas from.  So with that set aside let us start this list shall we?
1.    “The Book of Basketball” by Bill Simmons- Now I know what you’re thinking why he would recommend a book about the NBA.  Well, simply put, it is a very knowledgeable and humorous book that tells you a lot of funny and random things about the NBA.  Plus it is really cheap with it going as low as $12 on amazon.com.
2.    Blackhawks Ticket- These might be expensive now-a-days (being that it is the hottest ticket in town) but there is no bad reason to go down and support the Hawks.  Speaking as a sport geek and as a die-hard, there is nothing better than going down to the United Center and seeing the passionate fans cheering on their beloved team.  It is truly awe-inspiring.
3.    NHL 10- Continuing with the hockey theme one of my two video game selections that I think you should get for the holidays.  The graphics and game play are amazing.  It is a great game to play with friends and you can start some pretty nasty competitions.
4.    FIFA Soccer 10- I know that you’re thinking that I must be crazy for having this on my top ten.  But you should start to embrace the global phenomenon that is soccer.  This game is constantly rated as the best sports game around.  Plus it will introduce your sports geek to a beautiful game.
5.    Sports Jersey- Now your sport can support their favorite team in style, and also cause jealousy amongst their friends.  There are ton of jerseys out there that you can buy.  Bonus points for the retro styled jerseys.
6.    Ping Pong Table- Probably the most chaotic and fun game you can ever play.  It will never cease to provide entertainment for your sports geek.  It might stretch your pocketbooks but it is well worth the purchase.
7.    Big Screen TV- This one is geared more towards the older guys because what doesn’t make sports better than a big screen TV.  Now all the guys reading this are nodding their heads in agreement.  It makes every game for any sport 100000 times better.
8.    Baseball Glove- Once again you are confused as why this is on the list.  It isn’t flashy, isn’t spectacular, and it is pretty cheap, but that is what makes it great.  Give this to your future sports geek it will provide great memories of playing catch in your front yard.
9.    HD Sports Package- This and #7 are a great combination for your sports geek
10.    Sports Movie- Doesn’t matter what one it could be Hoosiers, Miracle, or Remember the Titans but as long as you get them one they can’t complain.
That wraps up my top 10 gifts of your sports geek.  I’m Matt Callaghan and I hope everyone has happy Holidays.
